Instructions for Students

Step 1: Reading short stories. (Done at home – individually) (20%)

  • Read 3-4 different stories (provided by your teacher)

  • Complete the chart for each story to make sure you understand the stories

Step 2: Checking your understanding of the stories. (Done in class – individually)

  • Complete a writing assignment that is connected to the stories you have read and given by your teacher in class. Hand it in. (10%)

Step 3: Getting to know what a short story is.

  • Get into groups of up to 4 students.

  • Search the Internet to learn about a story as a genre.

  • Prepare PPT presentation that tells others:

  1. What a short story is and how it is different from a play, a poem or a novel

  2. What elements a story has (setting. plot, characters, twist, message, etc.)

  3. What genres of a short story you know and what characterizes each one.

  • Share the information with your class.

Step 4: Getting ready to write your own story. (Done in class – in groups)

  • Brainstorm the ideas for your own story

  • Decide on:

  1. Genre

  2. Target audience

  3. Theme

  4. Setting

  5. Characters

  • Outline:

  1. Sequence of events

  2. Climax

  3. Twist

  4. Message

  • Write your ideas down in Google Docs.

  • Complete the checklist to make sure you have done everything right.

  • Send your notes to your teacher for approval.

 

Step 5: Writing your first draft. (Done in class – in groups) (20%)

  • Write your first draft of the story.

  • Make sure you:

  1. Included a detailed setting

  2. Added description of characters

  3. Used adjectives and adverbs to make your description more interesting

  4. Used appropriate tenses and sentence structures

  5. Wrote 200-300 words

  6. Checked spelling, punctuation and capitalization

  • Complete the checklist to make sure you have done everything right

  • Send your first draft to the teacher for grading.

Step 6: Writing your final draft. (Done in class – in groups) (10%)

  • Rewrite the story based on your teacher's comments.

  • Send your final draft to the teacher for grading.

 

Step 7: Creating an e-book. (Done in class – in groups) (30%)

  • Go to YouTube to learn how StoryJumper works

  • Go to StoryJumper.

  • Make a book:

  1. Think about the cover

  2. Divide your text into pages (a paragraph, 50-60 words, per page)

  3.  Look for illustrations

  • Record your book:

  1. Decide who is going to be a storyteller, each of the characters.

  2. Make sure that each one of a group has his/ her role.

  3.  Check pronunciation of difficult words.

  4.  Practice your part.

  5. Make sure you pause in the right places, your reading is smooth and understandable

  6.    Emphasize important words, make your feeling emotional.

  7. Add background music/ sounds (optional)

  8. Add the recording to your e-book.

  • Share your e-book with your teacher and other students of your class.

 

Step 8: Expressing an opinion (Done at home – individually) (20%)

  • Read e- books of OTHER groups.

  • Choose one you liked the most.

  • Record yourself explaining why you liked this e-book, what you liked especially and who would you recommend it to.

  • Send your recommendation to the teacher.
